Prize details from Bridge Classic Cars

This men’s cuff has been handmade here in Suffolk by Mike O’Connor of Vintage Formula, and is one of just 12 pieces made from the filler cap of the Ford GT40 that Mario Andretti raced at Le Mans in 1967. This one is piece number 3. Andretti shared the number 3 Ford GT40 Mk IV with Lucien Bianchi. Ford had secured its famous 1-2-3 finish the year before, and the pressure was on to follow it up. Unfortunately, Andretti and Bianchi’s race ended after the brakes locked up and Andretti crashed. Before that, though, he had set a fastest lap of 3 minutes 23.6 seconds, exactly matching fellow Ford driver Denny Hulme. Mike has been making jewellery from historically significant racing car parts since 2014. With this piece, he has taken material from Andretti’s GT40 filler cap and made something that can be worn to continue the story of the car into the future.
