The Value Ratio: Your Edge in Competitions

At Competition Showroom, we believe in transparency. Not all competitions are created equal, and we created the Value Ratio to prove it.

What is the Value Ratio?

The Value Ratio is a proprietary metric developed by Competition Showroom to determine the true underlying value of any competition (raffle, draw, or giveaway). It allows users to instantly compare competitions across different platforms—regardless of ticket price, total tickets available, or the prize itself.

How is the Value Ratio Calculated?

The calculation is straightforward but powerful. We look at the quoted cash prize and compare it to the theoretical total revenue the competition organizer will make if all tickets are sold.

The Formula:

Value Ratio = (Total Tickets × Ticket Price) / (Quoted Cash Prize)

Why Does the Value Ratio Matter?

  • Spotting the Best Deals: A lower Value Ratio means more of the total revenue is being returned to the players. A ratio closer to 1.0 is considered the "Gold Standard" of value.
  • Comparing Apples to Oranges: How do you compare a 99p ticket for a £50,000 car against a £10 ticket for a £10,000 watch? The Value Ratio levels the playing field instantly.
  • Avoiding Over-Priced Draws: Competitions with exceptionally high Value Ratios (e.g., 5.0 or higher) mean the organizer is taking a massive margin, making your individual ticket statistically less valuable.

Example Calculation

Imagine a competition giving away a £30,000 car.

  • Competition A: 40,000 tickets at £1.50 each. Total revenue = £60,000.
    Value Ratio = £60,000 / £30,000 = 2.00
  • Competition B: 105,000 tickets at £1.50 each. Total revenue = £157,500.
    Value Ratio = £157,500 / £30,000 = 5.25

In this scenario, Competition A offers significantly better value for the entrant (2.00 vs 5.25). You are paying a smaller "premium" over the actual prize cost.
