Instant Win vs Main Draw Competitions: Which Format Gives Better Value?

Two completely different formats sold under the same "prize competition" umbrella. They reward different behaviours, and the value lives in different places. Here is the breakdown.

Main draw: the classic format

One prize, one draw date, one winner pulled from a fixed pool of tickets. Your odds are simple: tickets bought / ticket cap. The Value Ratio applies cleanly. This is what most of our analytics is built around.

Instant win: the gamified format

Each ticket is checked at point of purchase against a pre-allocated set of winning numbers, and prizes are revealed immediately. There may also be a guaranteed main-draw prize at the end on top. Instant wins tend to be smaller (a watch, a games console, a few hundred pounds in cash) but are revealed instantly.

Where the value differences show up

  • Headline Value Ratio. On main draws, the VR captures most of the value picture. On instant-win draws, you have to look at total prize pool (instant + main) versus total ticket revenue, not just the main prize.
  • Variance. Main draws are zero-or-jackpot. Instant wins smear smaller prizes across many entrants — lower variance, more "small wins", but lower expected upside.
  • Behavioural pull. Instant feedback drives more impulse spend. That is the format's commercial purpose. Be aware of it.

Which is better?

For raw expected-value efficiency, well-run main draws still tend to win — fewer hidden mechanics, simpler maths, and the Value Ratio captures it cleanly. Instant wins are great for entertainment value and small-prize churn, but treat them as a different product, not a like-for-like swap.

What we do on the platform

We surface both formats but flag instant-win and percentage-only draws separately, because the Value Ratio metric works best on classic main-draw maths. See our methodology for how we handle the edge cases.
