How to Enter a UK Prize Competition for Free (Postal Route Explained)

Most UK prize competitions are required by law to offer a free entry route, usually by post. Most entrants never use it. Here is how to actually do it — and why it works exactly the same as a paid entry.

The principle

Under UK prize competition law, if an operator offers a free entry route, it must be on equivalent terms to the paid route. Same prize pool. Same draw. Same odds per entry. The free route is not a token — it is a real entry that wins real prizes.

Step by step

  1. Open the operator's terms and conditions and find the section headed "Free Entry Route" or "Postal Entry".
  2. Write your full name, address, contact details, the competition name, and your answer to the skill question on a single piece of plain paper or a postcard.
  3. Post it to the address listed in the T&Cs. Some operators require one entry per envelope — read carefully.
  4. The operator must add your entry to the same draw as paid entrants and contact you if you win.

What your real odds are

Same as everyone else's, per entry. The catch is volume — paid entrants can buy hundreds of tickets in seconds, while you are limited by stamps and writing time. The free route is best thought of as a way to dip into competitions you would not otherwise enter, not a way to enter every draw on the calendar.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to answer the skill question (an entry without it is invalid).
  • Multiple entries in one envelope where the operator requires one per envelope.
  • Missing the entry deadline — postage time counts.
